Cover to Cover

Cover To Cover | Allegiant by Veronica Roth

In honour of the film soon to be released in Australia, I believe it’s already out in the US?, let’s do a good ol cover to cover!

The UK Edition

I’m sure I’m not the only one that hates this cover. Not so much hate but the winged border around the ‘Allegiant’?, yeah it’s erking me. I mean the colour scheme is good and I like the feather but again the silhouette sets me off.

The US Edition

This is the cover I own and the graphics of that watery things always make me super excited! I love the burnt orange colour scheme as well and the city down the bottom adds a nice contrast

The Newer Edition

I’ve seen these around a lot especially in box sets. They have this abstract feel to them that I like. The flower is just beautiful and the metallic accents on the ‘Allegiant’ OH. But sometimes it feels like there’s too much black you know?

The French Edition

Upon first glance this seems like some intelligence files series or something. The cover is definitely much more on the abstract side and while I do like the flames part, the other colour doesn’t seem to sit well with me

The Serbian Edition

A very Sci-Fi feel to it, this one has. I like the colour scheme and it could almost pass as a graphic novel but just as a novel? hmm I don’t know.

The Verdict

It seems like an obvious choice for this cover to cover and I’m gonna have to go with my beloved US hardcover edition. Which one would you choose?

Cover To Cover | Divergent

Cover To Cover is an original feature at Infinity Reads released every fortnight where we swoon over and analyse pretty covers of the same book.

I can’t believe I haven’t done a Cover To Cover on Divergent yet! so without much further ado these are the pretty covers of Divergent up on the market

The US Version

This has always been my favourite cover! The colours and the glossy texture when you hold it. Also, the contrast of the symbol in the middle mm.

The UK Edition

Now see nothing wrong with these covers but they’re just not as appealing as the US ones. The colours and shadows are fine but the font kind of erks me.

The “Adult” Edition

It’s listed as the adult edition on Goodreads, um okay? but I like this cover. It’s simple, we’ve got the fire going and the simple font as well.

The Film Tie-In Edition

Really? Four and Tris look a little superficial but the colours in the background are pretty and it’s a mediocre cover I guess.

The Other Film Tie-In Edition

I like this cover much better than the previous film tie-in. It’s so dark and badass and Tris looks gorgeous!

The French Edition

Upon first impression I was like “this cover looks so cool!”, but then the person makes the rating go down, I never did like people being on the covers of books. But the artwork and colour scheme is still cool!

The Serbian Edition

This cover is cool too! Again I like the Dauntless symbol in the foreground of the city landscape. The colour scheme is also cool and post apocalyptic.

The Verdict

If I were in a bookstore and I had to pick up one of these…it would be a very difficult choice. I can see myself picking all of these really

Totally Should’ve Book Tag

I’ve seen this tag go around YouTube lately and decided it would be fun to do on the blog so here we go!

Totally should’ve gotten a sequel

Soundless by Richelle Mead just because it appeared to be so short and because you’re kind of accustomed to expect a sequel from Richelle Mead aha

Totally should’ve had a spin off series

This kind of might be cheating but Percy Jackson, the Trials of Apollo is coming out so my wishes have been granted I guess.

An author who totally should write more books

Jennifer Niven! All The Bright Places is one of my absolute favourite books

A character who totally should’ve ended up with someone else

This series isn’t finished yet but I believe Nathan from the Half Wild series totally needs to end up with Gabriel.

Totally should’ve ended differently

Lol Allegiant. People who’ve read the book know exactly what I’m on about.

Totally should’ve had a movie franchise

Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell, I think it can be turned into such a beautiful film

Totally should’ve had a TV show

The Raven Boys by Maggie Steifvater. The boys, the cars and the magic!

Totally should’ve had only one point of view

Under the Never Sky series by Veronica Rossi just because the two POVs’ voices didn’t seem distinct at all and it just ended up making me confused as to who was speaking!

Totally should have a cover change

The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare, I’ve never been a big fan of these series.

Totally should’ve kept the original covers

Hmm I’m not too sure on this one but the new covers of the Percy Jackson series seem pretty childish.

Totally should’ve stopped at book one

I’ve only read book one of this series and stopped but Splintered by A.G.Howard, it just drags on so much!

I tag anyone who’s up for doing this tag!

Film Review | Insurgent

Title: Insurgent

Director: Robert Schwentke

Stars: Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort, Theo James

Beatrice Prior must confront her inner demons and continue her fight against a powerful alliance which threatens to tear her society apart with the help from others on her side.

Finally 500 years after the movie came out I watched it and here’s what I thought

Keep in mind that I haven’t read the book since last year so this is really just what I thought of the movie on its own and not particularly as an adaptation.

Insurgent was, as expected, highly action packed and one word to just sum this whole movie up would be “badass”. Tris was badass, her boyfriend was badass, there was adrenaline in literally every scene and I loved it.

The whole idea of the box and the message from the founders simplified things and didn’t over complicate the plot. The whole depiction of the Factionless, Candor and Amity was on point, no complains there.

The movie did a really great job in projecting Tris’ internal struggle. I mean she just lost her parents, killed her best friends and we could see that trauma, we could see her struggle in trying to forgive herself. And when she does in the end, it’s so satisfying. But in doing that, the movie seemed to focus almost too much on Tris,  I mean we didn’t see as much of her relationship with Four or Christina which is obviously crucial.

As far as the book goes, I believe the movie covered all major events. The special effects were impressive but the ending was a bit too happily every after. I was beginning to wonder if there would actually be a third movie and the last cut rolls around and I can see that yes, there will be room for a third movie, hopefully they call it Allegiant, hopefully it’s not as bad as the book.

I really really liked Insurgent and I’m sure you will too, once you’ve watched Divergent of course, which I reviewed here. I might even like Insurgent better than the first one actually.

Film review

Insurgent Trailer: Why the hate?

The Insurgent trailer hit the internet recently and literally every other opinion I’ve heard is filled with complaint. So I decided, right, about time someone set some things straight about the adaptation of this series.

Be aware that spoilers from the books will be discussed.

The trailer starts with this mysterious box and the whole buzz is “THIS WASN’T IN THE BOOKS, WTF IS THIS”. I agree I was a bit thrown off by it the first time since yes it isn’t in the books but having watched the trailer a second time I believe the box might be the information Edith Prior left. I suggest people be a bit more open minded about these minor changes as heck it’s just a box.

Moving on we see Tris and Four and everyone in their Amity clothing, very impressive and from then it gets heavy. There are all these action packed scenes with the Factionless and people shooting guns. The complaint here is Tris is shooting a gun and in the books she isn’t able to do that because of Will. I agree with this because Will’s death had a huge impact on Tris’ character development but on the other hand seeing her kick butt is empowering. We all love a good kick ass female protagonist right?

Then Tris turns into a Transformer. Jokes. But she’s flying around and there’s fire and there’s her mom.

“Criticising voice”

First of all, I believe her mom is part of a simulation Tris is having, it’s a bit confusing but that’s my interpretation anyway. Second of all, it’s an ADAPTATION not a literal TRANSLATION of the entire book. So far they’ve stuck to the main plot, they haven’t replaced Shailene Woodley with Kristen Stewart so it seems pretty good to me. And Tris just watched her mom die in Divergent, doesn’t it make it powerful and symbolic for her to be trying to save her in Insurgent again?

Book readers also need to keep in mind that we only make a fraction of the target audience for this movie. Insurgent needs to be able to stand on its own and appeal to people who are never even gonna pick up the books.

This is just my opinion but I do hope the directors go in a different direction in terms of the final movie because let’s face it, Allegiant was not the best book.

I honestly don’t understand all the complaints surrounding how Insurgent is nowhere near the book. I saw many familiar events and characters so I’m content with that. Remember an adaptation is adapting the themes and ideas in a book to represent it as a movie so of course it’s not gonna be exactly the same. And it’s good that they tweaked a few things because it provides the book readers with some thrill as well.

It’s hard work making a movie let alone an adaptation so be open minded and I’m rooting for this movie to succeed just like the last one. Sure the trailer is confusing and not as exciting as Divergent but it’s not totally shit either.

Divergent- Film review

Divergent (2014)

Director: Neil Burger

Cast: Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Kate Winslet

Genre: Sci-fi, adventure, romance

Synopsis: In a world divided by factions based on virtues, Tris learns she’s Divergent and won’t fit in. When she discovers a plot to destroy Divergents, Tris and the mysterious Four must find out what makes Divergents dangerous before it’s too late.

Note: This isn’t a proper film review. I’m just discussing my thoughts on the movie in relation to the book.

The eagerly awaited Divergent movie is finally out! Divergent is a book to movie adaptation based on Veronica Roth’s Divergent. I highly recommend reading the books before watching the movie since they are the best.

Neil Burger has succeeded   in delivering one of the best book to movie adaptations in recent years. The movie stayed true to the book and there were no drastic changes. Of course the movie has its flaws but I am able to overlook them as all the important events in the book were present.

  • The opening shot introduces us to dystopian Chicago and the society of Divergent with its many factions, the introduction to this world wasn’t done in the most creative manner however it serves its purpose of informing people who haven’t read the book.
  • Moving on to the characters, Shailene Woodley did a brilliant job of portraying the protagonist- Tris. Her acting was very realistic and you were able to empathize with her in grim moments but also feel the thrill when she was being a bad ass. Theo James, who played the role of Four did a thorough job of portraying the sarcastic and strong man.
  • The movie captured the relationship between Tris and Four in all its entirety, they have great chemistry and the romance it gave me so many feels!
  • Divergent was fast paced and there was never a dull moment. I was always on the edge of my seat in anticipation. I got the same exciting thrill I experienced in the book. My favourite scene would have to be when Tris was zip lining, the adrenaline and the high oh bless!
  • The action shots in the movie were performed brilliantly. It wasn’t gruesome but you still felt the shocking impact that comes when a character is getting beaten up.
  • The score/soundtrack was beautiful absolutely genius oh my god, it made me feel all the roller coaster of emotions so profoundly and complimented the movie nicely.

  • However, the movie does lack character development. The reason I fell in love with the book was because of how Tris went from this unsure girl to this strong protagonist, and the movie sadly did not do the best job of capturing the transitions Tris experiences.
  • A lot of the other characters from the book were left out but the ones that did make it into the movie did not receive enough screen time. I would have loved to see friendships and rivalries develop as thoroughly as they did in the books but oh well.
  • I’m also disappointed that they cut some scenes short such as the ferris wheel scene for those of you who have read the book and know what I’m talking about.
  • Another thing that got on my nerves was ,get this, in the books Tris is afraid of intimacy and it is such a huge part of her character however, in the movie they decided to change intimacy into submission, so suddenly Tris is afraid of being raped I mean wut? Being afraid of intimacy is very different from being afraid of rape.
  • Also the simulation scenes where they showed Tris’ fears, it wasn’t very clear what exactly her fears were. Part of the reason I guess we don’t understand the simulation scenes well is because they were cut so short.

The movie Divergent did a great job of capturing the main themes and events in the book. Sure, there were little things amiss here and there but I’m satisfied with the end result. I would recommend watching the movie you won’t regret it and read the books too if you have time.

Have a great day/night
