Top 10 of 2014 | Best Book Boyfriends of 2014

Top Ten of 2014: A Week of Looking Back is a year-end meme hosted by Jamie @ Two Chicks On Books, Rachel @ Fiktshun, Mindy @ Magical Urban Fantasy Reads, and Nancy @ Tales of a Ravenous Reader.

Merry Christmas Everybody!

Today’s topic was a hard one and not for the reasons you might think. You see we had to choose boys from books read and released in 2014 which was difficult because I only read a said number of books released in 2014 that had good boyfriends in them.

But I managed to compile something so here we go!

Adrain Ivashkov (Silver Shadows- Bloodlines)

Because I don’t do things in halves, Mom. Especially when it comes to love

-Adrian Ivashkov

Charming, Chivalrous and bold Adrian stepped his romance game up by going out of his way to rescue his girlfriend and he doesn’t give a damn what society thinks about their relationship ‘claps’

Josh Wasserstein (Isla and the Happily Ever After)

Artistic, empowering and chilled Josh makes Isla feel confident and he pursues his love even when life gives him lemons.

Leo Valdez (Blood of Olympus)

I try not to think. It interferes with being nuts

Okay any boy who rescues you from an impossible never found island is boyfriend material. Leo goes out of his way to find Calypso and not only that he gets her out of there too!

Gatwick Patel (We Were Liars)

What if we could stop being different colors, different backgrounds, and just be in love?

This is the kind of guy I would date and those who’ve read the book you know how heartbreaking this is. He’s political, realistic and everything the other privileged, ignorant characters are not.

Nathan (Half Bad)

Severe torture would be an under statement to what Nathan goes through. The best thing is he doesn’t hold the girl responsible or stop thinking less of her. He is so strong

Maxon (The One)

Initially I didn’t have high views of Maxon but in the end he followed his heart instead of his bullying father and he is very liberating towards his kingdom and America.

Percy Jackson (Blood of Olympus)

It’s okay,” he said. “We’re together.” He didn’t say you’re okay, or we’re alive. After all they’d been through over the last year, he knew that the most important thing was that they were together. She loved him for saying that

Goofy, dedicated and caring Percy is so adorable as a boyfriend to Annabeth I can’t even and I love how they both manage to follow their goals in the end and sort of make a life together.

Ronan Lynch (Blue Lily, Lily Blue)

Ronan was angry _ every one of his emotions that wasn’t happiness was anger.

Is it just me or does anyone else ship Adam and Ronan like really hard? No seriously though Ronan is secretly affectionate towards Adam and has a crush on him which is so unlike Ronan to be all emotional but aw.

Evan Walker (The Infinite Sea)

I had it all wrong,” he says. “Before I found you, I thought the only way to hold on was to find something to live for. It isn’t. To hold on, you have to find something you’re willing to die for

During the Fifth Wave I thought Evan as creepy, He showers Cassie upon initially meeting her come on! But he was so devoted and dedicated to saving Cassie’s life in The Infinite Sea I just couldn’t oh.

Gansey (Blue Lily, Lily Blue)

I wish you could be kissed, Jane,’ he said. ‘Because I would beg just one off you. Under all this.’ He flailed an arm toward the stars.

Blue (Jane) and Gansey’s romance might just be the most unbearable love ever. Their meetings are so intense and Gansey is  trying to balance between his friends and Blue but it doesn’t always work out because Blue sets the sparks flying.

Well that went well! I’m gonna go stalk other people’s blogs now and look at pretty boys. In the meantime feel free to let me know about your book boyfriends and have a Happy Holidays

Top 10 of 2014 | Best villains of 2014

Top Ten of 2014: A Week of Looking Back is a year-end meme hosted by Jamie @ Two Chicks On Books, Rachel @ Fiktshun, Mindy @ Magical Urban Fantasy Reads, and Nancy @ Tales of a Ravenous Reader.

There was a list of topics we could choose from for today’s topic so I chose to discuss my top villains of 2014. I comprised the list from people who I can sort of empathize with or people who managed to really get under my skin. Enjoy!

Cersei Lannister (A Song of Ice and Fire)

Now I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again I love Cersei. She is a kickass female character in her own right and given her circumstance I can understand her. Westeros is a pretty sexist society so she needs to be a bitch to get her way and she shows those men who’s boss although sometimes she is cruel.

Gaea (Heroes of Olympus)

Gaea is the Earth Goddess in Greek Mythology and I was baffled to discover in Heroes of Oympus that she is evil. Earth is evil. She tempts the Heroes to destruct them, doesn’t give a damn about her own children and is a power hungry you know what. In saying that she did manage to build an impressive albeit gross army and in the end it didn’t take much to kill her. Honestly she proved way less powerful than I thought.

Vosch (The Fifth Wave)

The person who is going to be playing Vosch in The Fifth Wave is gonna be SO GOOD. I love how manipulative he is and his brain washing abilities are down right creepy. I especially enjoyed how his dialogue during The Infinite Sea set me thinking and I like people who make me think.

Ambrose (The Kingkiller Chronicles)

Ambrose is basically the Draco Malfoy of The Kingkiller Chronicles. He always bullies our protagonist and gets in the way and is dumb and annoying. But he stepped his game up in the sequel which I’m currently reading, oh boy. I didn’t think he would stoop to physical torture but yep he did. I like Ambrose because he always gets his ass kicked by our good guy and it’s kind of ironic that his name is Ambrose because Ambrosia is meant to be healing but he’s just a nuisance.

Amy Dunne (Gone Girl)

The world has never seen a more psycho bitch than this. Amy’s view on the world is so twisted and it was highly intriguing reading her POV and discovering how she perceived certain characters throughout the book. Her level of revenge and psychotic manipulation is downright creepy but me like.

Yagami Light (Death Note)

I managed to read about 10 volumes of Death Note in one sitting. Yep that good. It was interesting to see the twisted morale behind every death that Light concurred. I mean he’s become so consumed by the power of being able to kill anyone and he thinks he’s God and he uses people. He still manages to appear as a good old school boy and that is the scariest thing.

Sebastien Morgenstern (Mortal Instruments)

I have always been so irritated by Sebastien and his uhm intimacy towards his sister. Yuk. But the way he died in City of Heavenly Fire was so saddening and he paid homage to all the bad he had done and oh.

Assef (The Kite Runner)

Sexually Harasses little boys. Check. Inflicts Violence for pure pleasure. Check. Is a fanatic of Adolf Hitler and his morals. Check. A truly screwed up villain Assef managed to get well and truly under my skin. In fact even thinking about him makes me flare up.

The Alchemists (Bloodlines)

Okay honestly these people are so hypocritical and uptight and prejudiced ahhh. Like if one of their own rapes someone that’s okay but if a beautiful Vampire like Adrian Ivashkov wants to marry an Alchemist Sydney it is the biggest sin committed in history. Like dear God get your principles checked. And they won’t leave Sydney alone but they are pretty methodical and cunning so I have to give them that

The following might contain spoilers about Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

Martin Vanger (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo)

A villain who sent chills down my back with his corrupt and twisted mind. The thing was he did everything so calculatedly and secretly that he wasn’t exposed till the end. In the daylight he wore this nice businessman mask but that was just a mask for the evil sadist that he actually was. Martin Vanger is the world’s worst brother and I won’t tell why. But hey he died a hideous deserved death so yay.

I enjoyed making this post because I got to bitch about all those people aha. But honestly those people are good at their job of being villains which is why they made the list! I cannot wait to see what topics other people chose

Who’s your best villain?

Top 10 of 2014 | Best Books Covers of 2014

Top Ten of 2014: A Week of Looking Back is a year-end meme hosted by Jamie @ Two Chicks On Books, Rachel @ Fiktshun, Mindy @ Magical Urban Fantasy Reads, and Nancy @ Tales of a Ravenous Reader.

As is obvious from the title today’s topic is to celebrate the most beautiful covers of 2014! You don’t have to have read the books as long as the books were released in 2014 and I tried to differ my list from yesterday’s so here we go!

The One (The Selection #3) by Kierra Cass

The Selection series has the most majestic covers and make me want to dress up like a princess. This year’s release didn’t disappoint either!

Cress (The Lunar Chronicles #3) by Marissa Meyer

Meant to represent Rapunzel this cover could not have done a better job. I especially like the ribbon in her braid and hey the font of the title is awesome too

Into The Still Blue by Veronica Rossi

From the get go it was the colour scheme, I am a particular fan of all shades Blue but also Terry and Aria walking like cool kids on the cover just appeals to me

Isla and The Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins

The simple font with Manhattan in the background and the Ombre colours with that symbolic Rose just work so harmonically.

Blue Lily, Lily Blue by Maggie Stiefvater

“The Cover”, I gushed upon first laying eyes on this thing. This has got to be hands down the most artistic cover I have seen. The colours and patterns adorning the figure are just so beautiful.

Blood of Olympus by Rick Riordan

Okay first off this is probably the only cover where all the heroes are together and ah Gaia is so evilly flamboyant and I can’t believe all three colour schemes work so animatedly. Yep

Heir of Fire by Sarah.J.Maas

I have this UK cover which let me just tell you is WAY better than the Green US one. I love how Manga it is and the colours protruding from behind her get me every time. SO perfect. Oh btw I haven’t read this yet but I plan to.

A Thousand Pieces of You by Claudia Gray

To be honest I am only concerned by the cover because it is so captivating. I love the water colour action happening with some civilization incorporated and the title still manages to stand out. Great artiste skills

Afterworlds by Scott Westerfield

There is something so abstract and intriguing about this cover and although I haven’t read it I feel like it might be symbolic of the content of the book.

Half Bad by Sally Green

Again I love me some abstractness and it’s really arty how the title is vertically written like that and yes me like.

Well now that’s done. All this wonderful talent makes me feel well, like I have no talent but hey I blog! does that count as a talent? I say it does.

I’m excited to see your favourite covers so leave me links to your blogs if you’re doing this meme too! or just tell me your favourite covers in the comments 🙂

Most Anticipated Titles: Early 2015

About that time of the year when I start thinking about my reading plans for next year. I’ve compiled a list of new releases I’m looking forward to up to June 2015 mostly because most of the titles in late 2015 do not have confirmed dates.

Here are my most anticipated titles of early 2015! Click on the pictures which will take you to the books’ respective Goodreads links.

  • All The Bright Places by Jennifer Niven- January 6th

There is a buzz of excitement already in the book community and the book hasn’t even released yet. A promising contemporary read dealing with mental health issues which seems like such a progressing step in the YA community because acknowledging these issues provides support to young people and lets them know they’re not alone. Really hyped to read this and I can already tell it won’t disappoint.

  • I was here by Gayle Forman– January 27th

Another promising contemporary, I don’t much read contemporary but it seems like 2015 is gonna be that year. The story line seems really mysterious and intriguing. You all know how much I love Gayle Forman’s emotion packed writing!

  • Fairest (The Lunar Chronicles 3.5) by Marissa Meyer– January 27th

I have to have my yearly dose of Marissa Meyer and this seems like it will help me pass the time until Winter, The final installment in the Lunar Chronicles releases!

  • The Ruby Circle (Bloodlines #6) by Richelle Mead- February 10th

Ahh The date seems so close yet so far, I am literally numb from thinking that this is it. The last book in the Bloodlines series. It’s gonna be bittersweet.

  • Half Wild (The Half Bad Trilogy #2) by Sally Green– March 24th

I cannot even! I absolutely fell in love with the fantasy and adventure during Half Bad, the prequel so it’s no surprise that I’m going manic crazy waiting for this book.

  • Simon Vs The Homosapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli- April 7th

Another contemporary! I’m especially interested to read this book because the main character is homosexual and I wanna see more of these young adult themes incorporated in YA because books can be so motivational.

  • The Heir by Kierra Cass- May 5th

This came as a bit of a surprise. For those who’ve read The Selection you might know what I’m talking about. The tables are turned, the princess is looking for a price it’s gonna be interesting. Also THE COVER!

  • Kissing in America by Margo Rubb– May 26th

This is also one of those popularly talked about books of 2015 and I’m curious to see what the fuss is about and I don’t wanna miss out the party so why not read it! It’s got road trips and boys and friendships and sounds fun.

I’m interested to see how many of the aforementioned titles I’ll actually read ahah. Hopefully all but we’ll see. What books/ things are you looking forward to in 2015?

Also, let’s be Twitter friends!

We Are The Capitol

A couple days ago Ariel made a video where she discussed The Hunger Games. I suggest you watch the video so this post makes more sense.

She made a great point about how the books reflect our own world and how the fact of the matter is: WE are the bad guys, The Capitol.

Upon initially hearing this I was in denial of the fact because I’d always thought that our society was the “Katniss” and The Factions and that the governing body were The Capitol. But having given it some thought I came to the realization that I AM the Capitol, that the society I live in now are the bad guys in The Hunger Games books.

This might not makes sense but it makes sense in my head so: think about it, do we give a thought to the people that make our clothes like make them or the people that clean our sewage systems or the people that mine metals so we can have pretty rings. No. These people are the factions and as long as we have our shiny toys we don’t care. We’re obsessed with appearance, we like to see other people fall (it’s human nature), sound familiar?

I guess it’s privilege that make us The Capitol, that’s what I mean when I say ‘we’: The Privileged. Education, technology, food, they’re all privileges.

But we’re not all bad guys. I guess there is s Katniss inside all of us. Think about all the riots in history where people have stood up for their rights, revolutions and democracies, that’s all proof of the Katniss inside of us.

Another point is, I find it interesting that in The Hunger Games when Katniss and The Factions rebel we cheer on for the underdog taking charge but when in our own society riots are carried out so people can be heard we view them as nuisances.

So my final point is, I guess we’re both The Capitol and The Factions given the circumstance but for the most part we remain The Capitol. I don’t even know if this post makes sense but Ariel made a great discussion instigating video and I had to get it out somewhere. This is all purely my opinion and I do not intend to offend anyone.

Let me know your opinion!

A To Z Bookish Survey

Another day and another tag type post since that’s all I’m capable of because daily blogging is bloomin hard. Girl meets books did this survey and I was ecstatic to fill this survey out too so here it is!

Author you’ve read the most books from:

The award goes to Richelle Mead who has held my attention for so long I’ve read twelve books from her Jesus!

Best Sequel Ever:

The Mark of Athena by Rick Rirodan

Currently Reading:

The Wise man’s Fear by Patrick Rothfus (look out for a review soon!)

Drink of Choice While Reading:

I refuse to eat or drink around my books lest I damage them. But water breaks are a must! stay hydrated kids

E-reader or Physical Book?

I literally never read ebooks and I will always favour physical books. I just feel more attached to the story and stuff if I have the book in my hand ye know. Plus you can smell the books! (please tell me I’m not the only one?)

Fictional Character You Probably Would Have Actually Dated In High School:

Josh Wasserstein from Isla and the Happily Ever After. I love me an artist and he seems like the chilled yet philosophical guy I’d wanna be with.

Glad You Gave This Book A Chance:

The fifth Wave by Rick Yancey. It has went on to become my favourite series ever!

Hidden Gem Book:

We were Liars by E.Lockhart. Oh my God get on it!

Important Moment in your Reading Life:

I guess when I took the initiative to finally go out and buy a book. Before I’d just lounge around in the library but spending my money in books felt like a commitment, like an investment. Now I have my own little library! Obviously this went on to me creating a book blog and having such a lovely following.

Just Finished:

Blue Lily, Lily Blue by Maggie Stiefvater

Kinds of Books You Won’t Read:

Sappy romance novels like bleugh

Longest Book You’ve Read:

A Storm of Swords by George.R.R.Martin. Best 1177 pages of my life!

Major book hangover because of:

We Were Liars. I physically couldn’t breathe or comprehend my thoughts.

Number of Bookcases You Own:

I have one which is more like a half. The rest of my precious books are stowed away in boxes.

One Book You Have Read Multiple Times:

I don’t ever re read but I do recall reading the Divergent series twice.

Preferred Place To Read:

My bed! where else? Although I do try and explore the great outdoors but then it does weird things to my eyes.

Quote that inspires you/gives you all the feels from a book you’ve read:

I could make a whole post about my favourite quotes (should do that) but here’s one:

The world id full of assholes. What are you doing to make sure you’re not one of them?

-Everybody sees the ants, A.S.King

But here’s one from a book I’m currently reading that has got me intrigued

It had flaws, but what does that matter when it comes to matters of the heart? We love what we love. Reason does not enter into it. In many ways, unwise love is the truest love. Anyone can love a thing because. That’s as easy as putting a penny in your pocket. But to love something despite. To know the flaws and love them too. That is rare and pure and perfect.

-The Wise man’s fear, Patrick Rothfus

Reading Regret:

Not having discovered more books throughout my childhood. I wish I’d discovered the Harry Potter books before watching the movies!

Series You Started And Need To Finish (all books are out in series):

Throne of Glass by Sarah.J.Maas. I’ve only read the first book so yeah need to get around to reading the two other. Like, I’ve bought them and they’re just collecting dust.

Three of your All-Time Favorite Books:

Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky

Looking for Alaska by John Green

A Song of Ice and Fire by George..R.R.Martin

Unapologetic Fangirl For:

The Raven Boys by Maggie Steifvater, every time i read about the boys I have feel overload.

Very Excited For This Release More Than All The Others:

The Ruby Circle by Richelle Mead. The last book in Bloodlines! I cannot wait to see how it ends.

Worst Bookish Habit:

Never re reading any books. There’s just so much more to discover and so little time so why I would you know spend time reading something I already know the story to.

X Marks The Spot: Start at the top left of your shelf and pick the 27th book:

My first old copy of Game of Thrones by George.R.R.Martin

Your latest book purchase:

Splintered by A.G.Howard and The Power of Now

ZZZ-snatcher book (last book that kept you up WAY late):

The Infinite Sea by Rick Yancey, this is one book you need to read in one sitting.

This concludes the survey. I had a good time answering those questions and be sure to answer them yourself in the comments or on your own blog!

Until then, see ya later alligator

Bookish things I own Tag

I ventured upon this tag watching Priscilla from The Readables, she’s queen and so I went on a mission to find book related objects I owned.

It came as no surprise to me that I don’t own many since I’m basically broke from buying too many books to have money left over to buy book related merch. But here goes nothing

1. The Fault in Our Stars double sided poster.

Snapchat-2617757323165063082I got this at a Penguin Teen Event and the other side basically says: Okay? Okay. I don’t know if you can notice but there’s a rip on the bottom left, basically it’s above my bed and it fell on me at 4 am and I wasn’t too pleased so I smacked it aside and accidentally ripped it.

2. Hunger Games magnetic bookmarks.

Snapchat-911927057228931784 Snapchat-298050287872182248

These go way back when I initially started reading The Hunger Games. I don’t use them often but they’re cute and I like the quotes on the back!

3. The Mortal Instruments Artwork

Snapchat--4850762845022404662This came with my copy of City of Heavenly Fire and as soon as I lay eyes on it I was blown away, it is so cool! it’s like Manga and it features all the main characters. Isabelle (second left) especially looks badass in this.

4. Book Depository bookmarks!

Snapchat-3351731472131189067So basically Book Depository is the Holy Grail of online book shopping. It’s worldwide free shipping and every time you purchase a book you get a couple free bookmarks. Recently they’ve been using bookmarks created by book buyers all over the world and it’s a great creative outlet I think.

5.  Penguin Tote Bags

Snapchat-739288554900418289 Snapchat-4096602329588047519

I acquired these again at a Penguin Teen Event (those are just awesome). They’re so beautiful and useful too!

6. Game of Thrones phone case

Snapchat--3537367197064782456I am honestly so bummed this is the only Game of Thrones merch I have but hey one day. Yes, it’s the Targaryen Dragons because Daenerys is my girl crush and I’m rooting for her.

7. Crash Course Chemistry Poster

Snapchat-3525553694850894617I’m not sure if this counts but I still want to show it off! If you’re not aware Crash Course is an educational web series run by Vlogbrothers Hank and John Green. It is literally the only reason I pass school and I decided, about time I have a MASSIVE Periodic Table in my room so!

8. Blood of Olympus SIGNED poster

Snapchat--3079161357767955458My most prized possession! at least one of my most prized possessions. A Blood of Olympus SIGNED poster yes! It is honestly my greatest achievement in life and words cannot describe my love for the Percy Jackson books.

Here’s a close up for those who don’t believe me.

So Yeah it’s there

That concludes the bookish things I own Tag. I love how every little thing I showed you has a story behind it. I’d love to know about any merch you own (it’s probs more than mine) so I TAG YOU!

Book Blog Name Tag

Searching for blog post inspiration I came across this tag on my reader from brilliantly novel and decided it was fate that I do it.

It goes something like this: you take the letters from your blog name and find book characters whose names start with each of those letters. Sounds pretty simple so let’s do this!

Finnick Odair

Rose Hathaway

Eleanor Douglas

Anna Oliphant

Daenerys Targaryen

Scout Finch

The books the characters are derived from:

Isla- Isla and the Happily ever after by Stephanie Perkins

Noah- The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater

Finnick Odair- The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Iko- The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer

Nico- Percy Jackson and the Heroes of Olympus by Rick Riordan

Thomas- The Maze Runner by James Dashner

Ygritte- A Song of Ice and Fire by George.R.R.Martin

Rose Hathaway- Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead

Eleanor Douglas- Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell

Anna Oliphant- Anna and the French kiss by Stephanie Perkins

Daenerys Targaryen- A Song of Ice and Fire by George.R.R.Martin

Scout Finch- To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

This was a little more challenging than I originally thought but we got there!

Film review

Insurgent Trailer: Why the hate?

The Insurgent trailer hit the internet recently and literally every other opinion I’ve heard is filled with complaint. So I decided, right, about time someone set some things straight about the adaptation of this series.

Be aware that spoilers from the books will be discussed.

The trailer starts with this mysterious box and the whole buzz is “THIS WASN’T IN THE BOOKS, WTF IS THIS”. I agree I was a bit thrown off by it the first time since yes it isn’t in the books but having watched the trailer a second time I believe the box might be the information Edith Prior left. I suggest people be a bit more open minded about these minor changes as heck it’s just a box.

Moving on we see Tris and Four and everyone in their Amity clothing, very impressive and from then it gets heavy. There are all these action packed scenes with the Factionless and people shooting guns. The complaint here is Tris is shooting a gun and in the books she isn’t able to do that because of Will. I agree with this because Will’s death had a huge impact on Tris’ character development but on the other hand seeing her kick butt is empowering. We all love a good kick ass female protagonist right?

Then Tris turns into a Transformer. Jokes. But she’s flying around and there’s fire and there’s her mom.

“Criticising voice”

First of all, I believe her mom is part of a simulation Tris is having, it’s a bit confusing but that’s my interpretation anyway. Second of all, it’s an ADAPTATION not a literal TRANSLATION of the entire book. So far they’ve stuck to the main plot, they haven’t replaced Shailene Woodley with Kristen Stewart so it seems pretty good to me. And Tris just watched her mom die in Divergent, doesn’t it make it powerful and symbolic for her to be trying to save her in Insurgent again?

Book readers also need to keep in mind that we only make a fraction of the target audience for this movie. Insurgent needs to be able to stand on its own and appeal to people who are never even gonna pick up the books.

This is just my opinion but I do hope the directors go in a different direction in terms of the final movie because let’s face it, Allegiant was not the best book.

I honestly don’t understand all the complaints surrounding how Insurgent is nowhere near the book. I saw many familiar events and characters so I’m content with that. Remember an adaptation is adapting the themes and ideas in a book to represent it as a movie so of course it’s not gonna be exactly the same. And it’s good that they tweaked a few things because it provides the book readers with some thrill as well.

It’s hard work making a movie let alone an adaptation so be open minded and I’m rooting for this movie to succeed just like the last one. Sure the trailer is confusing and not as exciting as Divergent but it’s not totally shit either.
